Have you ever had God answer a prayer, and He answered it how you asked, but the mode by which the answer came was not comfortable?
I have. Tonight, in fact.
God showed Himself to me – His reliable strength, His everlasting faithfulness, His unfailing love.
He showed me that He is there, waiting with arms wide open, ready to receive me again. To be my strength. To love me.
But it took a hard thing to bring me to that realization. I guess I’m stubborn.
But that’s what it takes sometimes, isn’t it? A hard thing. A storm. The rain. Tears. Sometimes we’re so self-confident in our own strength, that God has to show us our vulnerability.
It reminded me of a song by Laura Story called Blessings. I’ve added the lyrics below – I hope you’ll read them. I’ve wept to them more than once. The song has been a friend of sorts to me over the last few years. (Music is like that, isn’t it? A friend. A shoulder to cry on.)
Here’s the song. Perhaps you need the message as much as I have. π
We pray for blessings, we pray for peace
Comfort for family, protection while we sleep
We pray for healing, for prosperity
We pray for Your mighty hand to ease our suffering
And all the while, You hear each spoken need
Yet love us way too much to give us lesser things
γγ
‘Cause what if your blessings come through rain drops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise
γγ
We pray for wisdom, Your voice to hear
We cry in anger when we cannot feel You near
We doubt your goodness, we doubt your love
As if every promise from Your word is not enough
And all the while, You hear each desperate plea
And long that we’d have faith to believe
γγ
‘Cause what if your blessings come through rain drops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise
γγ
When friends betray us
When darkness seems to win
We know that pain reminds this heart
That this is not,
This is not our home
It’s not our home
γγ
‘Cause what if your blessings come through rain drops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near
What if my greatest disappointments or the aching of this life
Is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can’t satisfy
What if trials of this life
The rain, the storms, the hardest nights
Are your mercies in disguise

I love this song by Laura. Indeed, sometimes we need to be hit in the face before we realize that on our own we can do nothing except He helps us. Your blog is a breath of fresh air! Love it!
