Monday: What Makes the Difference Between a Successful Start and a Serious Slump?

*beep* *beep* *beep* *beep*

Your bleary brain begins to refocus. Slowly the softly-lit dreambeams morph into the raucous rays of reality.

You hit the snooze, maybe drift back for a few minutes, but you can’t escape. Time is a relentless dictator, and his sirens yet again remind you of what you wish you could avoid.

Monday.

So, you surrender and reluctantly begin to prepare for your day. Now, these first moments of your Monday can be the foundation of your entire week.

So how can we utilize these crucial moments and start our week headed for success?

1. Accept that it is, in fact, Monday.

No living person is exempt from Mondays. It’s a weekly bane of our existence. So you will save yourself some time and energy if you skip right to acceptance.


Denial: “It can’t be Monday already!”

Anger: “Why does it have to be Monday?!”

Bargaining: “Maybe I’ll just skip (work, school, etc.) today and catch up tomorrow.”

Depression: “I’m so done. I can’t do this.”

And finally,

Acceptance: “Fine. It’s Monday. Let’s get it over with.”

(Yes these are the five stages of grief… it’s Monday.)


So by skipping right to acceptance, you’ve bypassed the other negative emotions, and your foundation is laid.

2. Attitude – it’s your decision.

“Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.”
Thomas Jefferson

And as Zig Ziglar said:

“Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.”

You have great influence on the direction of your day, your week, and you life simply by what attitude you choose. And that’s not only success or failure. If you decide that you are going to have a good day, then no matter what, you can have a good day.

Now there may be some days the only good you can fathom is the fact that God is good. And He is – All. The. Time. Whether we would consider the day good or not, God is good.

And in those days – any day really – you can make the day a good day by the good you give. When you’re overworked and stressed, do something nice for someone. When you’re facing a trial, find someone else going through something and meet a need. DECIDE that the day will be good – no matter what.

And decide that you will succeed! You may fall down, but you only fail when you stop trying.

3. Always – coffee.

Do I really need to explain this one?

Coffee is life juice.

4. Align your dress with your goals.

You only get one first impression. And believe it or not, the way you dress affects how you are perceived as well as how you perform.

Listen to what Forbes has to say about the power of dress in the workplace:

“Dressing casually could cause an employee to feel less focused and alert says Dr. Karen Pine, professor of psychology at the University of Hertfordshire and fashion psychologist.

“’When we put on an item of clothing it is common for the wearer to adopt the characteristics associated with that garment. A lot of clothing has symbolic meaning for us, whether it’s ‘professional work attire’ or ‘relaxing weekend wear’, so when we put it on we prime the brain to behave in ways consistent with that meaning.’”

There’s nothing wrong with being comfortable. But gauge yourself to see if perhaps your dress is affecting where you want to be professionally and relationally.

5. Act how you want others to act.

Are you hurt when someone talks about you behind your back?

Then don’t do that to those around you.

Do you appreciate it when someone takes the time to do something nice for you? (Open the door, bring you coffee, tackle an assignment, treat you to lunch, put in a good word, help with the dishes…)

Then do something kind for someone else!

This is one of my favorite quotes and I think it fits so well with this point:


I shall pass this way but once; any good that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being; let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

Really let that sink in. You have today, and you have it only once. Make the most of it, and spread all the kindness you can.
